see CAS Registry Number.

CAS Registry Number
A unique number assigned by the Chemical Abstracts Service, a division of the American Chemical Society.  Other than being guaranteed unique to a given compound, this number has no particular meaning.  CAS Registry Numbers are assigned to every uniquely identifiable substance, so ‘cis-2-hexene’, ‘trans-2-hexene’, and ‘2-hexene’ (a mixture with unspecified cis/trans composition) are all assigned separate CAS Numbers.

CAS RN
Chemical Abstract Service Registry Number, see CAS Registry Number

CEMS
Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems; Instruments which measure, on a continuous basis, pollutants released by a source.  Continuous measuring of gases or HAPSs (e.g. NOx, SOx); (CAA).  The 1990 Clean Air Act requires continuous emission monitoring systems for certain large sources.

CESQG
Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator; A RCRA generator who generates per site less than 100 kg of hazardous waste per calendar month.

CF

CFC
Chlorofluorocarbon.  A family of inert, nontoxic chemical substances used in refrigerants, air conditioning, propellant in aerosol sprays and as a solvent, which rise to the stratosphere and are associated with depletion of the Earth’s Ozone layer, which protects the Earth’s surface from harmful effects of radiation from the sun.  The 1990 Clean Air Act includes provisions for reducing releases (emissions) and eliminating production and use of these ozone-destroying chemicals.  (Regulated by CAA and TSCA).

CFM
Cubic Feet per Minute

CFR
Code of Federal Regulations; Codification of the general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register by the Executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government.  The Code is divided into 50 titles which represent broad areas subject to Federal Regulations.  Examples of the CFR are:

29 CFR – Protection of Workers:  OSHA

40 CFR – Protection of the Environment:  US EPA

49 CFR – Transportation:  US DOT

CO
Carbon Monoxide.  A colorless, odorless, poisonous gas produced by incomplete burning of carbon-based fuels including gasoline, oil and wood.  Carbon monoxide is also produced from incomplete combustion of many natural and synthetic products.  For instance, cigarette smoke contains carbon monoxide.  When carbon monoxide gets into the body, the carbon monoxide combines with chemicals in the blood and prevents the blood from bringing oxygen to cells, tissues and organs.  The body’s parts need oxygen for energy, so high-level exposures to carbon monoxide can cause serious health effects, with death possible from massive exposures.  Symptoms of exposure to carbon monoxide can include vision problems, reduced alertness and general reduction in mental and physical functions.  Carbon monoxide exposures are especially harmful to people with heart, lung and circulatory system diseases.

CO 2
Carbon Dioxide

COD
Chemical Oxygen Demand; Measures the amount of Oxygen (O2) required to oxidize both organic and oxidizable inorganic compounds in water.  Because COD measures both organic and oxidizable inorganic compounds, COD is almost always higher than BOD.  If BOD and COD numbers are in excess or the POTW’s ability to provide Oxygen, the wastewater will not be completely treated.

Conventional Pollutant
Under CWA, pollutants which deplete oxygen, alter pH, add TSS, fecal matter or oil & grease to a receiving body of water.  Therefore, “convention pollutants” are the following:  oil & grease, total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD-5) and pH.

Corrosivity
Characteristic of hazardous waste, (e.g.) pH > or = 12.5 or < or = 2.0.
